Maitahi & Sustainable Coastlines beach clean up on Haulashore Island

Maitahi Outrigger Canoe club and Sustainable Coastlines completing a beach clean up on Haulashore Island on Sunday. The weather was perfect for the paddle over to Haulashore. We had six W6 waka on the water and collected 17kg of rubbish from our survey area of 100m x 20m. As well as other rubbish from around the island. We were delighted that so many people turned up to assist.

Maitahi have committed to do this national wide survey every three months for the next three years. This is very exciting; this is how people make the change. The data from the collection site goes to Nelson City Council and government departments to be used as a reference.

Once the rubbish was all collected the bags were then paddled out to the harbourmaster’s boat for Amanda to deliver back to the marina.

Its never too early or too late to start paddling waka ama
