We have a number of club fundraising events coming up between now and Christmas. Those events require participation from club members and it would be good to see some new faces turning up, to take the pressure off those who are there for nearly every call out to the beach, marina or elsewhere.
The stark fact is that our annual club subscription (which amounts to around half a flat white per week) does not even come close to covering our basic club overheads. Insurance, repairs and general upkeep of existing waka and other equipment leaves us with a $2000 shortfall. So before we can even think about new paddles, waka, radios, dry bags, safety ropes (the list is almost endless), we need to raise money through club fundraisers.
The biggest of those is our annual Tuna e Hoe regatta in February, for which we are always scrabbling for volunteers on the day, but the numerous other fund raising events probably contribute more overall than TEHA. So please, please don’t ignore emails about helping at these events. If you can make just one, and maybe bring friends or whanau, you might be surprised that they are usually a great deal of fun.
Sean T has started sending out Teamer notifications for these fundraisers in the hope of putting them into members’ thoughts. If you can, tick accept and turn up to help. Coming up in near future are :
Saturday 28th September – Girl Guides : We will be taking 40 local girls out paddling from the beach.
Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th November – Richmond A&P Show : shifts on car park duty. A really good funding opportunity for the club.
As well as pure fundraisers we have some events (where we get some koha) that are as much about community service as fundraising. Foremost amongst those are our Halberg Foundation events where we get young people with various challenges out on the water. Anyone who has helped out at one of these events will tell you what a great experience it is.
Its never too early or too late to start paddling waka ama
We always welcome new members to the Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club.
We have social and racing waka ama crews catering for a wide variety of ages and abilities.
