Sounds like an epic race on Saturday at Picton for the annual Portage. The day started fine and sunny and ended up with 40km/h winds and sleet on the final leg.
It is a 20(+)km race for the W6 and a 10km race for OC1 and OC2 waka. The only challenge with the shorter 10km race is that it finishes in Torea Bay and then they have to paddle back to Picton (10km). It was then that the wind got up and things got interesting.
The kayaks have the option of a 10 km race or a longer where they go to the end of Torea Bay, Portage over to Keneperu Sound, paddle down and portage back and then paddle back to Picton.
Maitahi had 5 crews participating, 2 womens crew, 2 mixed and a mens crew with 2 honorary men (Katie and Raywynn). Zoe, Julie and Sean were in OC1 10km race.
Its never too early or too late to start paddling waka ama
