Traditionally we get Haulashore Island for the Big Beach cleanup which is an annual event organised by the Nelson City Council to clean up the shore line.
We had 4 waka and one paddle board paddling over to the island. The council provides bags and so we were sent off with our bags to scour the shore for rubbish.
The most interesting bits of rubbish
By far the most intriguing was a pair of ladies knickers, not sure how they got there!
By far the most common piece of rubbish were the parking tickets issued by Nelson City Council at the parking vending machines. These seem to be a plastic coated paper that floats. They were everywhere around the island and were hardly damaged at all from their journey. One can only assume that they get into the storm water systems and then out into the harbour.
Its never too early or too late to start paddling waka ama
We always welcome new members to the Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club.
We have social and racing waka ama crews catering for a wide variety of ages and abilities.
