On Sunday 2nd and Saturday 8th at January at 09.00 we are trying to get as many owners of single and double waka to meet at Tahunanui beach for a morning of fun.
The morning is intended primarily for new owners of waka who want to get out in a safe and friendly group and practise a bit of tipping out and getting back in, trying to fly the ama and generally getting a bit more confident in their abilities.
We will stay in safe and shallow waters close to the beach and have handy tips and assistance from those of us who have already fallen in a million times.
Those who have been paddling singles for a while can also enjoy a bit of inevitable huli and swimming as we will try to do a bit of ama flying while paddling on the right and other games.
If there’s any bump on the bar that is suitable for beginner’s surfing we can also split the group and take any new surfers over for a very safe play.
On Saturday 8th we will also hopefully have a W6 at the beach for a bit of crew ama flying and huli practice for anyone who might be a bit rusty.
Each morning should be a fun, safe, friendly way to up your confidence in your own waka and also a chance for those who haven’t paddled singles to come down and have a go, as there are a few owners willing to let their waka be used for a test spin.
Its never too early or too late to start paddling waka ama
We always welcome new members to the Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club.
We have social and racing waka ama crews catering for a wide variety of ages and abilities.
