With the excitement of Sprint Nationals behind us now, thoughts turn to Tuna e Hoe Ana which is in two weeks time – 7th & 8th February at Lake Rotoiti. There is still time to enter crews and we have club waka available. If you are going to get a crew together please do it now. If you have already entered please get your payments sent in (remember we will only accept a single payment for the crew, not individual payments).
If you do want to enter, the online entry form can be found here :
A few important reminders :
Volunteers
The event, our biggest club fundraiser of the year only works if we have enough hands to help. Membership of MOCC entails some volunteering responsibility. If you are racing at Rotoiti, or even better if you can be there for the weekend to help and not race, please contact our volunteers co-ordinator Suzanne Jones on [email protected]
Red Deer Lodge
The club books Red Deer Lodge for the Friday and Saturday night of the event. It’s incredibly convenient as it’s just a 5 minute walk from the foreshore at Kerr’s Bay. It’s also incredibly cheap at $30 per night in bunk rooms. There are excellent cooking facilities. You will need to bring your own pillow and blanket/quilt.
If you do want a bed for the night please contact Heather Law on [email protected]
Loading waka
Waka for the event will be loaded at the Marina on Thursday 6th February at 5.00pm. If you are in a crew you should be there to help load and if you are not you would be very welcome anyway ! Waka will be rigged for racing on Friday or on Saturday morning, loaded back on after racing and re-rigged at the Marina at 4.00pm on Sunday 9th February.
Didymo, drones and dogs
Please be aware that DOC (and us) do not welcome any of the above at the race. If there’s the remotest chance your paddling gear or other stuff has come into contact with didymo (Sprint National paddlers take note) please disinfect before coming to the lake. Drones are banned without a permit and dogs are not allowed, even in vehicles, at Kerr Bay.
BBQ
We will be operating a delicious BBQ on Saturday. It is cash only so please bring $5 notes if possible.
ZERO Waste Event
We are proud to be recognised as a ZERO Waste event. We do not accept waste from any kaihoe/paddlers or their clubs. The little waste we generate from running the event has been reducing every year. Last year we generated 5 litres of food/organic waste that was composted by Community Compost, and one bag of landfill waste. We ask everyone to bring their own reusable cup for coffee/tea etc., and that can then be used at the meal for any drinks that people bring into the Hall. The Hall does not have enough glasses for everyone attending the meal.
Waka Allocation
If you are using a club waka for your race as an MOCC entry, please let me know what your waka preference is. If we need more than four waka we have to organise transport on a trailer additional to our own, so we need to know as soon as possible about any more club teams. Contact Tony on [email protected]
International Guests
This year we have a crew from Wraysbury Dragons in the UK and some paddlers from Australia joining MOCC crews. We can’t guarantee the weather but we can ensure a warm Nelson welcome.
Finally…. Huge thanks to the Tuna e Hoe Ana committee that has been working hard for the past few months to get everything in shape for 7th & 8th February.
Its never too early or too late to start paddling waka ama
We always welcome new members to the Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club.
We have social and racing waka ama crews catering for a wide variety of ages and abilities.
