Sustainable Coastlines Cleanup Day

Maitahi Outrigger Canoe club memebers picking up rubbish for Sustainable Coastlines

Katie Thurston organised the Maitahi paddlers to do the second Haulashore rubbish collection for Sustainable Coastlines this Labour Weekend Sunday.

Thanks to the two crews who picked up litter from Haulashore island and categorised and weighed it all. We picked up 25kg of rubbish in our allocated GPS area of 20x100m. In July, we picked up 17kg. We found more lumps of concrete this time.

The weather was sunny with an energetic northerly heading back to the marina!

Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club has an agreement with Sustainable Coastlines that we will monitor and pick up rubbish on Haulashore Island four times a year for three years as part of the Sustainable Coastlines nation-wide survey. Our first cleanup was in July and the next clean up is in January 2020.

All data goes into Nelson City Council and the National data base. the rubbish found was mostly food wrappers, rope, plastic (hard and soft), styrofoam etc. along with the weird and wonderful from a syringe to a wee yellow rubber Duckie! The Lions Mane Jellyfish doesn’t count!
